LV CupAs followers of the America's Cup know, in recent years the Challenger has been determined by the Louis Vuitton Cup. The LV Cup was the sailoff to determine which of the challenging fleet had the honor of sailing against the America's Cup Defender.
This challenge procedure went out the window with the 33rd America's Cup when the courts ruled that the Challenger would be BMW Oracle and there would not be a defending sailoff series. As a result, Louis Vuitton withdrew support and began instead a series of Match Racing events around the world. The current activity is taking place in La Maddalena, Sardinia.
During the 4th day of Match Racing on the island, a collision occurred between Mascalzone Latino and All4One. The collision occurred during a tacking activity where Mascalzone, with Gavin Brady as skipper, tacked too close to All4One and serious contact was made. Mascalzone was penalized 1 point for the contact and, more importantly, the bow of Oracle was damaged severely enough to put it out of competition for several days.
Currently the standings for the competition are:
1.Artemis, Sweden, 3-0, 3 points
2.All4One, France/Germany, 2-1, 2 points
3.Azzura, Italy, 2-2, 2 points
4.Synergy, Russia, 2-0, 2 points
5.TeamORIGIN, Britain, 2-3, 2 points
6.Aleph, France, 2-2, 1 points
7.Emirates Team New Zealand, 1-1, 1 point
8.Luna Rossa, Italy, 1-3, 1 point
9.Mascalzone Latino Audi, Italy, 2-1, 1 point
10.BMW Oracle, USA, 0-3, 0
The racing schedule has been modified due to the damage from the collision and the events, wind permitting, call for more daily races and longer racing days.
Have a great day on the water.
